I enjoyed the perspective drawings in the 1st year so ive been drawing quite a lot of these this summer, hopefully i'd like a do a larger piece that could be used as part of my portfolio later on.

Here ive tried printing letters using different textured wall papers, i like some off the out comes, they're each one of a kind making them interesting.

ive moved my interest onto type and gone through the same process of recording type as i did textures. any type that stands out or is engraved in some way i have recorded.

Using drawing i can record textures that i come across in a different possibly more interesting way.

I took a lot of photos of things i thought had intersting colours, textures and feels to them. However taking photos is rather dull, i want to record such things in different more intersting ways.

Very simple design aimed to be decorative to fit in with your house's furniture and coloured walls, making this very functional within your home.

Love how plain the case to this perfume is apart from the type which is extremely bright and playful, which draws us in. The type stands out, the metal tin is bubbled out at the type adding to its playful feature.

For the print brief im interested in looking for homely things that have interest in one way or another for example the product above is a healthy drink clearly aimed at children. The character design and use of colour makes this more appealing to children.

Evaluation
This module began with the recognition day brief. I rather enjoyed this brief since i approached it differently to previous ones. I tried using photography as my main content. I used rather thought out photos that consided depth of field and macro. I feel these worked very well rather then using images that have been brought into illustrater and changed. The photos weren't altered but raw from the source which i think gives them more value. In this brief i should have considered the type more, as it was very important in supporting the photos. On a whole i feel the photos i used were very visually pleasing. It's taught me the importance photography can have in communication.
The next brief was How to... which started badly. My ideas to start with were poor and when i tried to make these work the results didnt look graphic and didnt communicate well. I produced many ideas but my development in this brief was lacking. When i changed my idea to one that was working which is the map idea i should have pushed it further with colour use and researched it more then i did. I aren't very happy with this brief there is a lack of development and research which would have pushed my final piece further. However on the plus i think i produced a lot of ideas on this brief all having potential. If i was to do it again i would push more of these ideas and develop them further.
The collaborative brief came next which made me have to organise myself. Since i was working with another person it meant i had to organise each day so we could work together share our ideas and develop them. Individually we gathered research and brought it together which meant we had more research on a whole. The problem with collaborative briefs is its easy to become reliant on your partner which in this case i don't believe was me. I prefer working by myself since there's noone else to rely on but me. From the last brief this one was more developed, when we had our idea we did develop it to try push it further and make it communicate better. More planning could have been taken to push the final idea further.
The final five week brief was speaking from experience. I found that distractions this year prevented me from working a whole lot so this is what i addressed. I should have produced more ideas, i feel i did jump into my ideas straight away without trying others and pushing their potential. I researched each of my final outcomes unlike in previous briefs to see what other designers have produced and help develop my ideas. I tried and tested different layouts to push my final pieces. I was rather happy with my final outcomes, i screen printed the majority of them which seemed appropriate. Compared to the previous briefs i think i pushed myself much more. I felt the benefits of researching my ideas and developing them i feel its given my final pieces more value and i appreciate them more.

Here's my coaster in action in the studio. Rather dashing!

In the center is my flyer which is simply tying together my resolutions and giving tips on how to study best without being distracted, i think as a set of things it works well with its mainly black and white theme and logo to tie it together.

This is my mouse mat which again i screen printed onto foam paper. The mat is completely type based. I wanted to play with positive and negative space which i think i did quite effectively. I listed many websites that would be considered as distractions from doing work, then placed my priorities logo in the middle in white appearing as negative space. Again simple idea but straight to the point without having to spell it out. The mouse mat to the right was an error when printing, i happened to print it without aligning it correctly so it was printed twice onto the mat. However i actually like this, priorities is more readable and i think the message is still clear.

I've screen printed onto each side of my coaster, one side being completely image based and the other being type. Together i think they communicate well my hopefully humerous message. I'm rather pleased with my coaster. Rather then using card as my stock i used foam paper since it'll be more water resistent.

Opposite to the below designs these are completely image based. Its nice to see these communicate just as clearly as the coasters below. These humeruous coasters are the way i want my coaster to be promoting people to get there priorities right.

Very simple coaster, with simple idea. the coasters type based, large clear font with simple colour use. It's not imformative just provides simple questions which are in context with its surrounding.

This is my poster, the idea being that distractions lead to a dead end which is why named distractions are waiting in the dead ends. Rather then trying to be imformative its simply trying to be interactive since the viewer can try and complete the maze. I screen printed the poster onto different coloured stocks to try and make the poster more visually interesting.

Theres a serious of sony adverts that are simple ideas but require huge amounts of effort to convey. The two adverts ive looked at here are amazingly bright and really engage with the audience because of this. However they are still simple ideas to start with, its not over complicated.

Again character based however i prefer the composition in this poster, its more 3d then the very flat dont panic poster. This kind of illustrative character work is something i would be interested in working with throughout summer.

Nice collective of simple characters, bright colourful and extremely engaging, i like it.

Extremely simple graphic design but known throughout our society. We know the shape of this road sign means stop with having to even read the word stop. Very simple but manages to engage the audience and make them do something.

I like this simple image and type piece. One word says everything, 'progress' with barack obama above it we know the piece is referring to him being the first black president without having to actually say this. Nice simple play with type and image.
Speaking from experience...
My problem for this brief is being distracted. For me this year distractions have stopped me from completeing more work then i could have done.
I want to approach this in a more humoureous way rather then trying shock, guilt tactics. I'll aproach this brief in different ways, meaning rather then my final piece being one thing eg a book i want to have different end results for different environments eg kitchen, pub, cinema.

Wednesday 1 April 2009

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
This module has helped me develop ways of communicating message through image alone. It has also helped me consider colour in doing this. Through doing What is a line i have learnt how to produce stock animations which before this module i had never attempted before. One of the major things i have become aware of is perspective drawing. Previously i had never been taught this, now im confident in produces the grids to place my drawings into too produce a 3D image.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
I took many photos in What is a line to develop ways of producing depth in an image. Previously photography hadn’t been a big focus or considered until this module. All my work is primary research since it is all showing how i’ve tried to create depth in different ways. The stock animations i did being an example of my primary research since id never tried this before. My secondly research was mainly the other animations i viewed to help give me ideas and awareness for my own.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think my final couple of stock animations were my strength, they were no longer static or of such a poor quality as the beginning animations. They flowed much more successfully, with the camera rotating and depicting the object rather then being rather dull and only showing one perspective of the 3D shape. I think the photos which i took conveyed depth well, I feel i experimented well with the photos trying out different and varied scenes which i could try create depth of field. I have also learnt to consider what is necessary to communicate message. Image and type together aren’t always needed, also using too much in a frame can over complicate something which can be delivered very simply. I will consider this from now on when communicating message. I have new skills in stock animation and photography which i will also carry on with me.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
I think there might seem to be a jump from my sketch book work to the stock animations i started to produce, without showing the correct development for this change. I should have evaluated more on my blog and sketch pad to show more of my thought process throughout the module. I found the pictograms difficult to simplify to a level that would clearly still communicate the message but not be over crowded by information. This is something i must work on more to help me with designing to communicate.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Next time i will show my developments of ideas more clearly rather then have them only in my head. I need to show my ideas in my sketch book so it’s clear to see my train of thought. Not only will everyone else be able to see my ideas but i will be able to work from them easier once down on paper.
Time management is an issue, i should have given this module a certain amount of time per day to produce a bigger overall amount of work.
I will evaluate my work more often next time to allow me to be able to self reflect and see where my work can go from that point.
I should have produced more drawings in this work to enhance my drawing skills and given me a better understanding of line.
Like i experimented with stock animation i will do similar in the future. I will experiment more often with different things to gain a broader understanding of different techniques and mediums.

Im happy with this video, i think it flows better then the others. I only moved the blocks slightly before taking the photos to make sure it would flow better. I particularly like how the camera moves around the lego as its being deconstructed, showing depth right round the block.

Friday 20 March 2009

The above and below images are a couple of our final solutions to how to make people use public transport more. We targeted car drivers and used global warming as our facts to try make them use public transport more. Using facts on how our world is changing because of global warming and imagery we hope that our posters will help make car drivers use public transport which in the long run would mean less car emissions going into the atmosphere, which is a factor for global warming. One problem we found was keeping to two colours then stock which was a restraint on the brief. It meant designing simple imagery, considering the colour and how we could use the stock effectively. I think we did this well, we used the green as the promoter of using public transport which is why the bus in the imagery is green then the car in the logo is coloured red. More research could of been done for this brief to back up our ideas more, also more photographs to work with would have been better and we should have experimented with more layouts and colour.

Last brief was to create a way of showing how to choose a university. To begin with i find posters and leaflets that are targeted at students since my target audience would also be students. The research i found was very bright, illustrative and intense so to begin with i took on this approach and tried to design something intense and illustrative. However this didnt work out, it wasn't appropriate to the context of the poster and simply blended in with every other poster seen in student common rooms, cafes etc. I need a new angle and decided to title my work how to find a university. Changing choose to find allowed me design a poster based on a map. As you can see above my poster is a map with the street names being the things to consider when choosing a university. I should have put colour into my work it would have made the work more visually interesting and i could have used colour to highlight the roads the viewer should be looking at. I probably should have left the other street names out because it takes the viewers eyes away from the roads i wish them to be looking at. All in all i tried to keep my idea simple and straight to the point in the end and i think i achieved this.

Rather then just playing with blocks at random, im going to make the lego have more of a constructed building feel and begin to play with the camera angle to see how i can make a plain 3D building become more visually interesting using construction and deconstruction.

Nice quick animation i found similar to mine in the way that it's quite experimental simply trying things out

Friday 13 March 2009

The first 2 videos below were my first experiments simply trying out stock animation since ive never done it before as you can probably tell. The stick man video is poor, he doesn't really look like hes walking, the animation needs a lot more pictures to make it flow, i should have done more drawings for it.
The very simple line drawing works a lot better, flowing quite nicely.
I wanted to start experimenting with lego to make building blocks. When we see a city landscape the landscape has depth by the Buildings closer being bigger so i've started to play around with this using lego. I'm defo going to take this further and play around some more.

Think im going give animation a go with lego hopefully will give me more chance to play with depth, things moving closer and further away
really sorry none of my own animation have been posted, technical difficultie.

Thursday 5 March 2009

really like the work below, like the illustrations within it and how its isn't static 2D the image is moving back and forth on the page.

Monday 2 March 2009

Problem with the images with people in them are that those people are only applicable to me, not anyone else. for individuals it will have to be more text based, the image of the foot print works well for individuals because it could be anyones foot print.
I like the up close personal images too rather then the standard landscape large images. I think the macro pictures make it more personal therefore i'll be working with these types of images.

And here's some of my own images i could work with for this brief on awareness of individuals and nature.
